Spring begins on the March or vernal equinox, which is when the amount of sunshine is approximately 12 hours long. The amount of sunlight will incrementally increase until the first day of Summer.

The vernal equinox marks the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator. This is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth's equator, from south to north. The vernal equinox happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same event marks the beginning of fall.  Meteorologists mark the spring from March 1 through May 31st.

In 2020, spring arrived a little earlier due to it being a leap year. On Leap Day, there's a short math lesson regarding the Gregorian calendar. To keep our calendar following the seasons so that spring happens when flowers grow and winter arrives when snow falls, an additional day was figured into years divisible by the number four. This caused the 2020 spring to occur earlier than any living human being alive had ever seen. Before 2020, the earliest spring on record took place in 1896.

HOW TO OBSERVE SPRING BEGINS

• Get ready for longer days and increased sunshine.
• Tune up the lawnmower. More sunshine means the grass will be growing.
• Spend some time outside.
• Plan your garden or start planting. 
• Host a spring party with lots of bright, fresh foods.

On March 18th, we recognize National Awkward Moments Day. This is an annual day that every person can relate to. We have all had our awkward moments from time to time. They are a part of life; they just happen.

Awkwardness or embarrassment is defined as an emotional state of intense discomfort with oneself.

Have you ever called someone by the wrong name, tripped over nothing, walked into a door, had the completely wrong words come out of your mouth, or just forgotten what you were doing?  The list could go on and on. Sometimes, things just do not seem to go right and something happens that may make you feel like you want to run and hide. No matter the day, today, or any other day, everyone has them.  

How to Observe Awkward Moments Day

• Find the ability to laugh at yourself, see the humor in awkward moments and have fun with them.
• Relive old awkward moments by telling stories about them. Laugh over them and enjoy the memory.
• Help someone else recover from an awkward moment. They may be embarrassing at first. However, the humor in these moments shows just how human we can be. 
• Keep in mind that no one is perfect, ever.
• Wear humility like a cloak and laugh at yourself.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY  

 

St. Patrick's Day kicks off a worldwide celebration also known as the Feast of St. Patrick. On March 17th, many will wear green in honor of the Irish and decorate with shamrocks. According to lore, the wearing of the green tradition dates back to a story written about St. Patrick in 1726. St. Patrick (c. AD 385–461) used the shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity and worn green clothing. And while the story is unlikely to be true, many will revel in the Irish heritage and eat traditional Irish fare, too.

In the United States, St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated since before the country was formed. At times, the holiday has been a bit more of a rowdy one, with green beer, parades, and talk of leprechauns. However, in Ireland, St. Patrick's Day takes on a more solemn mood. It wasn't until events in the United States broadcast in Ireland that some of the Yankee ways spread across the pond. One Irish-American tradition not common to Ireland is corned beef and cabbage.

It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.

Those celebrating the day would pinch those who didn't wear green as a reminder of what could happen (or to impersonate the leprechauns and fairies). That said if you're going to pinch on St. Patrick's Day, be gentle, or better yet, bring along some green stickers to place on other revelers as a way of offering protection from those menacing leprechauns and fairies.

On March 16th let National Everything You Do Is Right Day correct all the wrong of March 15th. We know that day may have been a difficult day as it was National Everything You Think is Wrong Day. But this holiday, you get to feel good about everything that you do.

You can use the printer and everything will print beautifully. No typos, no duplicate paragraphs, and just the right number of copies. All the children will make their practices on time. You will pass exams with flying colors. If there's a problem, you'll be right about the solution and fix the problem. Tell right jokes. Like this one:

That's right!

How to Observe Everything You Do Is Right Day

• Test out a theory and declare your rightness no matter what.

• Talk politics with your dad just one more time. (Remember, everything he does is right, too.)

March 15th recognizes Everything You Think Is Wrong Day, a day where decision-making should be avoided, as your thoughts are (according to the founder of this holiday) wrong. It is also a day created for some people to realize that they are not always right.

While starting a conversation, one might want to avoid using the words "I think." The observance may be a time for all to contemplate our own lack of knowledge. It is okay that one does not know everything, and if there is a need to feel as if you do, hold on. Tomorrow will be here soon, and then once again, you can think that you do!

How to Observe Everything You Think Is Wrong Day

While you might think it would be ok to point out how wrong others' thoughts are, you'd still be wrong. You'd still be wrong for thinking that. However, it would be a good day to scroll on by all those Twitter comments that annoy you. Of course, if you're wrong on this holiday, take solace in the thought that so is the person to the right and left of you. Then again, you'd still be wrong, according to the name of the day. NATIONAL PI DAY 

National Pi Day on March 14th recognizes the mathematical constant π. Also known as pi, the first three and most recognized digits are 3.14. The day is celebrated by pi enthusiasts and pie lovers alike!

Pi is the ratio between the circumference of a circle and its diameter. While the idea of pi has been known for nearly 4000 years, accurately calculating it has been something of slightly more recent mathematical development. By 2000 BC, the Egyptians and Babylonians accurately used the constant to build. Mathematicians such as Archimedes, Fibonacci, François Viète, Adriaan van Roomen, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz all calculated pi by various methods. However, in 1706, Welsh mathematician William Jones introduced the Greek letter π to represent the ratio of a circle's circumference; pi. 

How to Observe National Pi Day

• Celebrate the day with a slice of a pie cut using the mathematical constant of pi.
• Host a pie-eating contest.
• Discuss the significance of the number π.
• Watch the Life of Pi.
• Look for 3.14 in unexpected places. For example, prices, street numbers, or license plates.

In 1988, Larry Shaw organized the earliest known official or large-scale celebration of Pi Day at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The Exploratorium continues to hold Pi Day celebrations.

On March 12, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224) recognizing March 14, 2009, as National Pi Day.
